Most TRANSFORMERS fans grew up attached to the ’80s cartoons and toys, or maybe their newer incarnation from the Bay films. Then there’s a group like me who latched onto the ’90s spin-off BEAST WARS. Instead of transforming into cars and jets and boomboxes, these transform into animals and extinct dinosaurs. This cartoon series ran for three seasons between 1996 and 1999. The series was fully animated in CGI instead of a more traditional cel animation, which might be laughable now but was remarkable at the time. More remarkable was its dramatic storytelling and characterization, giving each Transformer a unique and fleshed out personality and tying huge chunks of lore back to the original show. While a lot of the toys didn’t quite look like actual animals, as are understandably harder to design for than robots into cars, they were likewise a lot of fun.
This nostalgia trip hits hard as IDW celebrates the 25th anniversary of the franchise with a new TRANSFORMERS: BEAST WARS comic series. This first issue comes from some IDW Transformers vets with Erik Burnham and Josh Burcham, which is an extra-large special kicking off a new telling of the familiar story.
