Warner Brothers/DC have been struggling for a while to compete with Disney/Marvel to bring extended universe storytelling from comic books to life. DC has misfired several times with extended universe films but this new television project has a great team behind it. Matt Reeves will produce a cop drama set in the same universe as his upcoming Batman film. What makes this concept most interesting though is that Terence Winter will be writing and producing the series. Winter knows how to write corruption and crime well since he got his start on The Sopranos and went on to write the critically acclaimed Boardwalk Empire.
The series does not have an official title yet but the codename for it appears to be Gotham Central.
From The Hollywood Reporter:
HBO Max says the series will be “set in the world Reeves is creating for The Batman feature film and will build upon the motion picture’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, ultimately launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms. The series provides an unprecedented opportunity to extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad of compelling and complex characters of Gotham.”
No start date for the show has been announced.
