Director James Gunn, the man behind the Guardians of the Galaxy films, is close friends with Nathan Fillion, presumably from the time they spent together working on the classic film Slither. Gunn also became friends with Michael Rooker on that film. Gunn brought Rooker in to play the great Yandu in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Fillion has been featured in nearly all of Gunn’s films in a cameo role. Guardians of the Galaxy Chapter 2 was originally no different. Gunn has revealed that toward the end of the editing of the film he decided to remove Fillion’s cameo from the film for a god reason. He did not want the cameo to harm Fillion’s potential for a greater role in the MCU.

Gunn imagines Nathan Fillion as the classic Marvel character Wonder Man. Wonder Man has appeared in cosmic stories in Marvel Comics as well as the Avengers. Wonder Man’s alter ego is a smarmy actor named Simon Wright. Gunn believes that Fillion can nail this role but if the character isn’t brought into the MCU he doesn’t want Fillion locked into that role by a cameo. There’s one scene that was only removed from Guardians 2 for pacing that will be highlighted on Gunn’s social media. The scene was set on earth and it featured movie posters featuring images of Fillion as Simon Williams playing various roles. Gunn intends to share the posters with us, which is a pretty cool thing!

No word from Marvel on the existance of Wonder Man in the MCU or any other opportunities for Fillion at this point.
