Shows like Spartacus and to a much greater extent Game of Thrones have proven that fantasy films can be an extremely successful genre on TV, especially if they are based on popular book franchises. So syfy has announced that they are joining the fray with a pilot of The Magicians, an adaptation of Lev Grossman’s best-selling fantasy book series which has been published in 22 countries. The pilot script was written by John McNamara (Prime Suspect) and Sera Gamble (Supernatural). Michael London (Milk) and Janice Williams (All Good Girls) are set to produce. Synopsis from the press release:
The one-hour drama follows 20-somethings who, while studying magic in New York, discover that the magical fantasy world they read about as children is all too real and poses a grave danger to humanity.
It’s still too early to get any sort of release date considering the project has just been greenlit and there have been no casting announcements. Stay tuned for more information as it’s made available!
